About Hutch
After a hitch in the US Navy, Jim “Hutch” Hutchinson became a light airplane pilot and flight instructor.
At the culmination of his mid-life crisis, he sold it all and bought a boat, a small sloop. That was in 1984.
Flying and sailing have much in common.
Ambia’s initial cruising gounds were the Florida Keys and the Bahamas, but they’ve been in the Windward Islands since ’94, mostly in the Grenadines Islands.
All of his life Hutch has been cursed by good fortune and favorable circumstances, which gave him the choice to be productive or not. He chose the latter but with a certain style.
Hutch characterizes himself as a “three trick pony” – a small-yacht and dinghy sailor/instructor, an inventor of simple and novel mechanisms and methods that are of limited use, and he likes to write.
Hutch used to sail a hell of a lot more than he does now. He does still sail his dinghy.
Talk about spoiled, Hutch masquerades as a proper yachtsman, living ashore as his faithful boat, Ambia awaits in the bay.
He lives in the tropics where the people are friendly and the US Social Security applied to a modest lifestyle makes him wealthy.
